Three ministries, one aim: we’re taking the first step

Connecting infrastructures, development programs, initiatives, projects and communities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in such a way that they create a strong ecosystem to benefit the common good: for this purpose, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) have joined forces and launched the initiative ‘Civic coding – AI innovation network for the common good’. Why? By collaborating across all sectors, we’re determined to find out how AI systems can serve the common good: our coexistence, society, the working world and the climate.
Social innovations can only be successful if we work together, which is why we’re looking forward to your perspectives on the development of AI-based, social innovations and your experiences developing and using AI applications for the benefit of the common good.

We want to discuss the conditions and resources of a living AI ecosystem together during the re:publica programme at our trade convention.

‘AI FOR ALL: CREATING A LIVING ECOSYSTEM TOGETHER’
                                                   on 21 May 2021 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The ‘Civic coding’ initiative

With this initiative, the ministries are looking to establish social expertise, structures and conditions and thus implement the following objectives:

  1. Creating more opportunities for social adoption of AI technologies.
  2. Promoting social use of AI for the benefit of the common good.
  3. Promoting AI expertise across the board.
  4. Incorporating social ideas for the social and sustainable development of technology.

It will primarily be the following ministry projects that are connected: the Civic Innovation Platform, the Civic Data Lab and the AI creative workshops for environmental protection (Civic Tech Labs for Green). By sharing and connecting the infrastructures, the ministries are helping to create a living AI ecosystem for the common good in Germany and Europe. Further information will soon be available at www.civic-coding.de.
